Reach Is The Prerequisite For Engagement
High-quality engagement is valuable, but meaningful engagement cannot occur without sufficient reach to create discovery in the first place.
What assumption do you disagree with?
I disagree with the assumption that depth of engagement is generally more important than breadth of reach.
While engaged communities often produce stronger relationships and long-term loyalty, reach plays a critical role in exposing ideas to new audiences. An idea that reaches only a small group may generate deep discussion, but its overall influence can remain limited if it never escapes that circle.
Many influential movements, technologies, and businesses began by maximizing visibility before developing strong communities. Discovery often precedes engagement. Without reach, there may be too few opportunities for meaningful interactions to occur.
What conclusion is different?
Rather than prioritizing engagement over reach, creators and platforms should recognize that reach and engagement are complementary. Reach creates opportunities for engagement, while engagement determines whether attention converts into lasting influence.
