Fundraising Is Not A Growth Strategy

A startup can raise millions of dollars without achieving product-market fit, retaining customers, or discovering a repeatable growth engine. Capital provides resources, but it does not create demand. As James Hawkins of PostHog argues, venture capital is a tool rather than a strategy. Additional funding can accelerate an existing growth engine, but it cannot create one where none exists. Companies frequently assume that hiring more people will automatically increase growth, yet larger teams also introduce coordination costs, onboarding overhead, and organizational complexity. Growth depends on a working system, not merely more resources. This is why many successful founders spend their early years learning rather than scaling. Paul Graham famously argued that startups must “do things that don’t scale” in order to understand customers deeply. Founder-led sales, manual onboarding, direct customer conversations, and hands-on support are inefficient activities, but they generate something more valuable than short-term efficiency: understanding. Before a company knows why customers buy, stay, or leave, adding capital often amplifies uncertainty rather than reducing it. Fundraising becomes powerful only after a startup has identified a repeatable mechanism that converts effort into growth. A company with strong retention, clear customer demand, and a functioning growth engine may use capital to accelerate hiring, expand distribution, or increase product investment. A company without those foundations often becomes more expensive before it becomes more successful. The purpose of fundraising is not to create growth. Its purpose is to accelerate growth that already works.
